* * *

I’m walking down Queen’s Road so I stop at the convenience store for cigarettes.The clerk asks my ID, not because he thinks I’m eighteen but because he thinks it’s funny with my roots showing. I have to do it because his boss is there, so I rummage through my purse and find my driver’s license.

I’m thirty, I say, as I hold it up for him to see and there’s that sly grin of his.

He wants to fuck me is what this is all about. One night at the Spur he left his teenaged blonde at a table and came striding up to where I was sitting at the bar.

You’re a musician, aren’t you? he asked.

No.

What do you want, the bartender asked him.

Her, he said, pointing his finger at me. How much for her?

The bartender handed me an India and took his money. That’s a start, she said, and he laughed. Then he noticed the blonde watching him and he straightened a bit.

Girlfriend? I asked.

Wife, he said, and then, it’s amazing what women will believe.

He took the change and went back to the table. She looked satisfied with whatever explanation he provided.

In broad daylight, he’s not as handsome. In the daylight, his face is pockmarked, his hair is flat and dull and his jeans hang down to his knees, revealing a pair of SpongeBob SquarePants boxer shorts.

You can stop carding me already, I say.

Then what will we talk about, he says.
